A new era for symmetry

Welcome to the first issue of a new symmetry. Starting this month, symmetry goes back to its monthly roots with a modern twist: The magazine will come out once a month online, supplemented with breaking news from our symmetry breaking blog.

While symmetry's format is changing, the magazine's content and quality will remain the same. We'll still cover all aspects of particle physics and its intersection with life and culture, seeking out the fun and the fundamental for our readers.

And print lovers are still welcome: We'll continue to bring out a print issue twice a year.

This is the latest step in symmetry's continuing evolution. The magazine began in 2004 as a 10-times-a-year print publication. Each print issue was also made available online—a rarity for research magazines at the time. At the 30-issue mark in 2008, symmetry caught the blogging wave, greatly expanding its online content with the launch of symmetry breaking while preserving the popular print edition with six issues per year.

Over the last four years the explosion of online content has continued. Today's symmetry reaches far more readers online than in print, and online readers expect more from their stories—more interactivity, more multimedia, and more timely content. With the magazine's 50th issue behind us, it is the right time for a change to the magazine's format.

We're excited about this next step. We hope you'll join us by subscribing to and reading the magazine online and in print, reading and commenting on our blog, joining us on Facebook and Twitter, and sending us your comments and letters.

A new editor for symmetry

The new online format isn't the only change ahead. Starting with the next issue, Kelen Tuttle will take over as editor-in-chief for symmetry.

Tuttle's name will be familiar to long-time readers. Her byline first appeared in the magazine back in 2005, when symmetry was less than a year old. She started as a contributor from Fermilab and then moved to SLAC, where she has worked for six years as a writer and editor.

Tuttle looks forward to hearing your questions, comments, and especially suggestions for how symmetry can meet your needs. Please contact her at kelen@symmetrymag.org.
