To learn more about neutrino oscillations, the next generation of experiments need to have a distance between neutrino source (Fermilab) and detector of 800 miles or more. The mine in Minnesota that you refer to (Soudan mine with the MINOS neutrino detector) is only 450 miles from Fermilab.
